标题: China's development
Directions: Over the past few decades, China has emerged as a global powerhouse, achieving remarkable development milestones that have reshaped its economic, technological, and social landscape. China's economic growth has been nothing short of spectacular. With a GDP that has soared from 59.3 trillion yuan in 2013 to 121 trillion yuan in 2022, China has become the world's second-largest economy. Its contribution to global economic growth has been significant, with an average annual contribution rate exceeding 30%. The country's rapid development has not only elevated its citizens' living standards but also positioned it as a key player in the global economy. Innovation has been at the heart of China's development strategy. The country has seen a surge in research and development (R&D) investment, with a remarkable increase in R&D funding from 1 trillion yuan in 2012 to 3.09 trillion yuan in 2022. This investment has propelled China into the ranks of the world's leading innovators, as evidenced by its global innovation index ranking, which has steadily climbed to 11th place in 2022. China's social development achievements are equally commendable. The country has successfully eradicated extreme poverty, lifting nearly 1 billion people out of poverty and creating the world's largest middle-income group. The increase in per capita disposable income has significantly improved the quality of life for its citizens. China's development achievements are a testament to its resilience and strategic planning. However, the road ahead is not without obstacles. The country's ability to innovate, adapt, and address these challenges will determine its continued growth and influence on the global stage. As China moves forward, the world will be watching its progress with keen interest, hoping for a future where China's development contributes to global prosperity and stability.

标题: A wardrobe
Directions: But when next morning came there was a steady rain falling, so thick that when you looked out of the window you could see neither the mountains nor the woods nor even the stream in the garden. "Of course it would be raining!" said Edmund. They had just finished their breakfast with the Professor and were upstairs in the room he had set apart for them—a long, low room with two windows looking out in one direction and two in another. "Do stop grumbling, Ed," said Susan. "Ten to one it'll clear up in an hour or so. And in the meantime we're pretty well off. There's a wireless and lots of books." "Not for me," said Peter. "I'm going to explore in the house." Everyone agreed to this and that was how the adventures began. It was the sort of house that you never seem to come to the end of, and it was full of unexpected places. The first few doors they tried led only into spare bedrooms, as everyone had expected that they would; but soon they came to a very long room full of pictures and there they found a suit of armour; and after that was a room all hung with green, with a harp in one corner; and then came three steps down and five steps up, and then a kind of little upstairs hall and a door that led out on to a balcony, and then a whole series of rooms that led into each other and were lined with books—most of them very old books and some bigger than a Bible in a church. And shortly after that they looked into a room that was quite empty except for one big wardrobe; the sort that has a looking-glass in the door. There was nothing else in the room at all except a dead blue-bottle on the window-sill. "Nothing there!" said Peter, and they all trooped out again—all except Lucy. She stayed behind because she thought it would be worth while trying the door of the wardrobe, even though she felt almost sure that it would be locked. To her surprise it opened quite easily, and two moth-balls dropped out. Looking into the inside, she saw several coats hanging up—mostly long fur coats. There was nothing Lucy liked so much as the smell and feel of fur. She immediately stepped into the wardrobe and got in among the coats and rubbed her face against them, leaving the door open, of course, because she knew that it is very foolish to shut oneself into any wardrobe. Soon she went further in and found that there was a second row of coats hanging up behind the first one. It was almost quite dark in there and she kept her arms stretched out in front of her so as not to bump her face into the back of the wardrobe. She took a step further in—then two or three steps always expecting to feel woodwork against the tips of her fingers. But she could not feel it. "This must be a simply enormous wardrobe!" thought Lucy, going still further in and pushing the soft folds of the coats aside to make room for her. Then she noticed that there was something crunching under her feet. "I wonder is that more mothballs?" she thought, stooping down to feel it with her hand. But instead of feeling the hard, smooth wood of the floor of the wardrobe, she felt something soft and powdery and extremely cold. "This is very queer," she said, and went on a step or two further. Next moment she found that what was rubbing against her face and hands was no longer soft fur but something hard and rough and even prickly. "Why, it is just like branches of trees!" exclaimed Lucy. And then she saw that there was a light ahead of her; not a few inches away where the back of the wardrobe ought to have been, but a long way off. Something cold and soft was falling on her. A moment later she found that she was standing in the middle of a wood at night-time with snow under her feet and snowflakes falling through the air. Lucy felt a little frightened, but she felt very inquisitive and excited as well. She looked back over her shoulder and there, between the dark tree trunks; she could still see the open doorway of the wardrobe and even catch a glimpse of the empty room from which she had set out. (She had, of course, left the door open, for she knew that it is a very silly thing to shut oneself into a wardrobe.) It seemed to be still daylight there. "I can always get back if anything goes wrong," thought Lucy. She began to walk forward, crunch-crunch over the snow and through the wood towards the other light. In about ten minutes she reached it and found it was a lamp-post. As she stood looking at it, wondering why there was a lamp-post in the middle of a wood and wondering what to do next, she heard a pitter patter of feet coming towards her. And soon after that a very strange person stepped out from among the trees into the light of the lamp-post.

标题: How Looks Affect
Directions: Summarize Marko Pitesa’s idea. Give your own opinion. You might think that good-looking men have every advantage in life. But a new study suggests being handsome may not always work in a man's favour – at least when it comes to his career. The research claims that attractive men are less likely to be given a job in a competitive workplace because they intimidate bosses. 'It's not always an advantage to be pretty,' says Marko Pitesa, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland. 'It can backfire if you are perceived as a threat.' Interestingly, in Pitesa's study, it was male attractiveness in particular, rather than female beauty, that made the most difference. If the interviewer expected to work with the candidate as part of a team, then he preferred good-looking men. However, if the interviewer saw the candidate as a potential competitor, the interviewer discriminated in favour of unattractive men. In the first experiment, 241 adults were asked to evaluate fictional job candidates based on fake qualifications and experience, in an online setting. Men evaluated men and women evaluated women. Interviewers were primed to either think of the candidate as a future co-operator or competitor, and they were given a computer-generated headshot that was either attractive or unattractive. 'Kind of attractive and average, maybe slightly below average,' Pitesa clarifies - no supermodels. A second experiment involved 92 people in a lab. They were asked to evaluate future competitors or partners in a quiz game, based on credentials that included sample quiz answers, and they saw similar headshots. The patterns of discrimination based on perceived self-interest was the same. Another test opened up to include men interviewing women and women interviewing men. There was still a preference to cooperate with the attractive man and compete against the unattractive man. A final experiment used photographs of actual European business school students, vetted for attractiveness, and found the same pattern. The results suggest that interviewers were not blinded by beauty, and instead calculated which candidate would further their own career. 'The dominant theoretical perspective in the social sciences for several decades has been that biases and discrimination are caused by irrational prejudice,' Pitesa says. 'The way we explain it here, pretty men just seem more competent, so it is actually subjectively rational to discriminate for or against them.' On a deeper level, she adds, the behaviour remains irrational, since there's no evidence that a real link exists between looks and competence.

标题: Facial recognition
Directions: There has been global uproar regarding facial recognition technology and whether and when it’s ethically sound to use it. Its use without citizens’ consent could have potential safety benefits but is undoubtedly a violation of privacy. Unfortunately, the recent news about facial recognition comes at a confusing time. Facial recognition is also being used in airports, banks and healthcare establishments to accurately determine whether a person is who they say they are. Because of this, it’s become a tricky balancing act between using facial recognition for account security, watchlist screening or nefarious purposes. While newer regulations like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) are steps in the right direction to protect consumer privacy, there is a need for tighter regulation for facial recognition technology. Facial recognition vs. facial authentication To help draw a clearer line in the sand when it comes to facial recognition and necessary regulation, there needs to be a better sense of what the technology can and cannot be used for. The best way to help draw this distinction is by putting facial recognition and facial authentication in two different buckets. Facial recognition without an individual’s consent has been at the center of controversy in recent news. It’s often associated with widespread surveillance and a breach of civilian privacy. Its use should be distinguished as a technology that removes control from the person whose likeness is being captured without consent — in some cases to catch bad actors or known terrorists, but in other cases, the intent is more malicious. For example, American billionaire John Catsimatidis was recently criticized for using the Clearview AI app to profile his daughter’s date. Catsimatidis simply captured a photo of the individual and uploaded it to the app to conduct a full-fledged background check. While his intent is seemingly innocent, the use of the technology is a clear breach of the suitor’s privacy, as it was used without the individual’s consent or awareness. This use case can and should be considered an abuse of the technology and needs to be reinforced by regulatory bodies. Facial authentication, on the other hand, gives the individual full control by offering a choice as to whether they would like to allow the technology to identify them. Facial authentication is performed to protect logins and is permission-based — it offers a superior level of account protection compared to usernames and passwords, knowledge-based authentication or even SMS-based two factor authentication. Because traditional authentication methods are no longer sophisticated enough to keep up with today’s advanced fraud landscape, high-risk industries like banking and finance are turning to face-based identity authentication and verification instead. These emerging technologies compare the photo on a government-issued ID (e.g., a driver’s license) to a real-time “selfie” at the time of onboarding. After the user has been verified, the user’s face (i.e., the selfie) can be used for downstream account authentication. Instead of asking the user for the make/model of their first car or mother’s maiden name, a user’s selfie can be used as a second factor and incorporates sophisticated algorithms that can pick up on the slightest abnormalities and can either grant or reject access to the user. When it comes to an individual’s finances, this type of due diligence can offer the highest degree of confidence for the user, especially for high-risk transactions like wire transfers and password resets. The point of differentiation is the distinct control that is given to the user before any face-based identity verification or account authentication is conducted. In this way, we can say that facial authentication verifies an individual’s identity, whereas facial recognition often exposes it. It’s also important to note that there are, in fact, edge cases that should be debated on a case-by-case basis. For example, India is known for having high volumes of missing children (just under 250,000 in the past five years alone). Because of this, the Indian government created a database with photos of missing children and used facial recognition technology to identify thousands of them. How do the technologies differ from a technical POV? One of the most concerning aspects of facial recognition technology is whether its results are 100% accurate. We see this concern when we look at use cases like surveillance during riots or strikes. For example, if facial recognition is being used to identify any given individual off the streets during a riot and is then used in an arrest, there will be question as to whether those results are reliable or even just. The issue with this use case is that facial recognition technology often uses a large database of photos in order to make some sort of match. Because of this, the accuracy is often skewed. Facial authentication, on the other hand, uses one original photo from a passport or driver’s license in order to make a clear distinction that it is in fact the individual in question. Because the algorithm has the original photo to base its decision, there is much higher confidence in its level of accuracy. Recent debate around the use of facial recognition brings to light an urgent need for regulatory measures and clear distinction behind the appropriate use of the technology. By educating regulators and society at large, we can create a system that enables the utmost confidence in the use of face-based identity verification and mitigates its use for dubious purposes.

标题: About Job Change
Directions: A recent survey revealed that 69.8 percent of the Chinese working population was cautious about landing new jobs in the upcoming job change season. Nearly 86 percent of the respondents in the survey by China Youth Daily noted that people should be more prudent about job-hopping at the turn of the year, a perspective that received the most support from people born in the 1980s and 1990s and those with an annual income between 100,000 yuan and 200,000 yuan. The survey found only 28.4 percent of respondents was optimistic about changing jobs in the next couple of months. Most of those surveyed are either 5 to 10 years into the workplace or with an annual income between 200,000 yuan and 300,000 yuan, it noted. A total of 2,015 working staff took part in the survey.

标题: Should swimming lessons be mandatory in schools?
Directions: Guangdong province is set to make swimming lessons compulsory in primary schools starting from 2020, and proposing the courses be given from the fourth grade. Do we need to make swimming compulsory in schools? Summarize the opinions of the forum readers and share your opinion. WhiteBear (Poland) In Poland swimming lessons are not compulsory, but most of the schools have them. I think that when it is only possible - there should be the swimming lessons for kids. It is a lifesaving skill. MisterPanda (France) I come from France where swimming lessons in school are compulsory (dating back to Charlemagne查理曼大帝!). I even got my lifesaving certificate in school. Jet.feng (China) As a boy born in a rural area, I learnt swimming in a river near my home when I was 7 or 8 years old. I used to play in the river with boys my same age every summer, which was also the only entertainment we could make at that time, but we enjoyed it so much! I just learnt how to dog paddle (breaststroke) because no one taught us. Until I entered university, I got a chance to enhance my swimming skills in PE lessons. Compared with my classmates, I felt lucky because most of them couldn't swim. I think it's a good idea for schools to teach students to swim. But as a matter of fact, not every school in China has the conditions to do that. In some less-developed areas, there is not even a swimming pool for a whole county with a population of half a million people. Boilermaker21 (Expat外籍人员 in China) There are swimming lessons in my city, but I was very disappointed in how they were taught. The kids spent 45 minutes of the one hour lesson practicing strokes ON DRY LAND. They only spent 15 minutes in the water. All of the children panicked and sank immediately to the bottom. Then all of the parents berated the children, telling them that they weren't paying attention to the teacher and that they were failures. ceciliazhang (China) It is a pity that many Chinese athletes won world championships in swimming while most schools don't have the swimming facilities. Swimming is an essential lifesaving skill that everyone should access to. The earlier, the better. The government needs to put money into the popularity of the sport.

标题: Digital Textbooks
Directions: Read carefully the following excerpt and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: (1)summarize the main message of the report, and then (2)comment on Kalpit Shah 's view. [A] The shortcomings of traditional print edition textbooks are obvious: For starters they’re heavy, with the average physics textbook weighing 3.6 pounds. They’re also expensive, especially when you factor in the average college student’s limited budget, typically costing hundreds of dollars every semester. [B] But the worst part is that print versions of textbooks are constantly undergoing revisions. Many professors require that their students use only the latest versions in the classroom, essentially rendering older texts unusable. For students, it means they’re basically stuck with a four pound paper-weight that they can’t sell back. [C] Which is why digital textbooks, if they live up to their promise, could help ease many of these shortcomings. But till now, they’ve been something like a mirage (幻影) in the distance, more like a hazy (模糊的) dream than an actual reality. Imagine the promise: Carrying all your textbooks in a 1.3 pound iPad? It sounds almost too good to be true. [D] But there are a few pilot schools already making the transition (过渡) over to digital books. Universities like Cornell and Brown have jumped onboard. And one medical program at the University of California, Irvine, gave their entire class iPads with which to download textbooks just last year. [E] But not all were eager to jump aboard. [F] “People were tired of using the iPad textbook besides using it for reading,” says Kalpit Shah, who will be going into his second year at Irvine’s medical program this fall. “They weren’t using it as a source of communication because they couldn’t read or write in it. So a third of the people in my program were using the iPad in class to take notes, the other third were using laptops and the last third were using paper and pencil.” [G] The reason it hasn’t caught on yet, he tells me, is that the functionality of e-edition textbooks is incredibly limited, and some students just aren’t motivated to learn new study behavior.

标题: A Horror Story
Directions: 续写 Hotel at the End of the Road Stephen King "Faster!" Tommy Riviere said. "Faster!" "I’m hitting 85 now," Kelso Black said. "The cops are right behind us," Riviera said. "Put it up to 90." He leaned out the window. Behind the fleeing car was a police car, with siren wailing and red light flashing. "I’m hitting the side road ahead," Black grunted. He turned the wheel and the car turned into the winding road-spraying gravel. The uniformed policeman scratched his head. "Where did they go?" His partner frowned. "I don’t know. They just—disappeared." "Look," Black said. "Lights ahead." "It’s a hotel," Riviera said wonderingly. "Out on this wagon track, a hotel! If that don’t beat all! The police’ll never look for us there." Black, unheeding of the car’s tires, stamped on the brake. Riviera reached into the back seat and got a black bag. They walked in. The hotel looked just like a scene out of the early 1900s. Riviera rang the bell impatiently. An old man shuffled out. "We want a room," Black said. The man stared at them silently. "A room," Black repeated. The man turned around to go back into his office. "Look, old man," Tommy Riviera said. "I don’t take that from anybody." He pulled out his thirty-eight. "Now you give us a room." The man looked ready to keep going, but at last he said: "Room five. End of the hall." He gave them no register to sign, so they went up. The room was barren except for an iron double bed, a cracked mirror, and soiled wallpaper. "Aah, what a crummy joint," Black said in disgust. "I’ll bet there’s enough cockroaches here to fill a five-gallon can."
